Hi Jerome,
I don't know what James was thinking when he said he wanted to use the DS for his kitchen. I assume its because of its versatility in functionality that it can be used for a lot of things from playing games to use by kids for their school work to using it in the kitchen. (James what were you thinking really? I hope not to fry an egg! Or can it do this?).
I must go back to the reason why we all are together in this group. Its to bring the idea of the OLPC program to the Philippines. Now I can understand if you and some of the other members do not want to be limited in just using the OLPC XO as the device for this purpose. And we all know the many trials and tribulations we all had in getting the needed support from OLPC Boston even just to provide us a limited number of XO for
testing and development. But to immediately bypass the opportunity of first testing the suitability of the XO in the local setting, foregoing the benefit of its unique design i.e. for its use by kids education, and ignore tapping in on the wealth of goodwill people have to support the OLPC project locally is to me the main issue here.
Let's first use the OLPC XO for our needs of providing the many public primary school for online education. Let's cover the every school of such kind the benefit of this device. Let's give everthing and anything we can to support it. And once we have done all of this, we may consider evaluating the next generation of devices to replace it.
For those members who may have a different view about this and would like to do it in a different way, I wish you well and hope you do a better job not using the OLPC XO. I really wish you the best because while we may have our differences, our goal is still the same: providing online education in the Philippines. However, I have made my decision to stick first on implementing the OLPC program in the Philippines.
Bear in mind we are not the only group who has this goal. The Ayala Foundation
which is the social development arm of the Ayala Corp started their GILAS program three years ago and has the resources of the Ayala group and the financial support of donor agencies like USAID. PBSP which is the country's biggest NGO is funded by some the country's biggest companies like PLDT, Nestle and IBM and has its Education in IT program. Despite the amount of resources that these two groups have available, online education is nowhere near saturation point or even at that point of critical mass.
I am proceeding with my own initiative of organising an OLPC Philippines Foundation that will be similar to OLPC Australia to carry out the OLPC program in the country. I hope I can continue on your support to this effort despite our possible differences.

probably have a Nintendo DS game console or a family member does
(most likely your child). Today, Nintendo unveiled a classroom
solution utilizing the Nintendo DS with a turnkey solution which
includes the software and the server components to make it possible to
use the Nintendo DS to deliver education called Nintendo DS
Kyoushitsu. The premise is that you load a computer with the server
software, and pop in the classroom cartridge to the DS and the game
consoles connect to the computer using the client and server software
which can accommodate up to 50 DS consoles per 1 server. Since the
game console has wifi, everything is done wireless as well and local.
There are planned activities for kanji, math, civics, physics, and
history, but new activities can also be added with a spreadsheet
interface. The product and service offering is expected to be released
by Feb 2010.
