<br><br>if i can find a coder, i do have a research license for TrIM, a multilingual instant messaging client that could be used to help facilitate such exchanges -- it could be ported and adapted for the xo -- and for testing a connection it could tap google's translation api (which google agreed to give access to). for kids acquiring/learning language, machine translation would be acceptable.
<br><br>but there is still enough interest out there that even just practicing english would be realistic, no multilingual im needed.<br><br>may already be happening; but getting a school in the u.s., canada or europe to raise money and sponsor some self-directed xo machines would seem to be very possible; something kids and a community could get into -- like "sister schools" or whatever. very possible.

I would really like there to be dialog between XO children in these countries and XO children in ours. People may feel unconnected to a massacre or famine in Rwanda if they see it on tv, but not if it's one of their children's playmates.
<br><br>I agree with Todd that direct sponsorships might be pretty hard to set up and/or manage. But some method of communication or hopping over the jabber-based remote mesh software would be a great idea. Unfortunately that mesh software is still immature and being worked on very hard, daily. I don't even know what mechanism would be required for this sharing to happen.

I am not "against" a sponsorship program but I have a friend who runs a number of orphanages in cambodia and other areas of the world, and they specifically choose not to do sponsorships -- they used to, but he said what ends up happening in his experience is that many people lose interest after time and then the children are devastated. The only thing I can think of as a solution that still accepts the gracious intent of sponsorship is some kind of group sponsorship, so that if some lose interest, there are still others. This could be through a school, a community/church group, etc. -- there may also be organizations that have some solution to it.
<br><br>at the same time, if someone does keep up with it, it can be interesting; i think i had a friend who sponsored a child through compassion international, and kept with it, and met the person, who had graduated from school, etc. -- perhaps a group of friends could make a new friend.
