OK, I have been playing around a bit. I can make the browser appear when
I put it in my daughter's laptop. On my laptop the USB does not now
reliably boot. I get a USB device descriptor read error during a boot
attempt. It's in one of it's sulky moods.
My laptop (and everyone else's hereabouts, and the girl in the copy
shop) otherwise reads & writes the stick just fine, so I'm beginning to
suspect that there is something weird here. Like the bootloader may have
an issue with some USB 2.0 drives.
