A Vaccine Against Ignorance

ARBODELA VIDEO: URGENCY, EPIDEMIC, VACCINE AND IMMUNITY IN EDUCATION

The One Laptop Per Child Foundation Europe organised the first ever TEDx
Kids featuring hands-on workshop skills for primary age children. The
event took place on the 1st June with the objective of introducing 10
year old kids to some rudimentary making and hacking techniques. Moving
from hammer and saw to 3D design and hacking the web, we showed that
given a set of tools and a task to perform, a group of 10 year olds will
come up with something amazing. Rodrigo Arboleda, CEO One Laptop Per
Child Foundation, speaking at TEDx Kids at Brussels, outlines the powerful
concept of the ignorance vaccine. In 2008 the president of Uruguay made
an extraordinary committment; to provide every school age student in the
country with an XO as the most effective vaccine against ignorance
available today. To date Uruguay has shipped 380,000 laptops and looks
like nurturing the most wired generation in South America.

"If you can't read, you're toast"

NEGROPONTE VIDEO AT THE UNITED NATIONS JUNE 2011.

/What am I doing today that market forces cannot do or are unwilling to
do?/ This is the question Nicholas Negroponte asks himself every day.
Recently he's been thinking about literacy amongst the world's poorest.
Most educational thinking has it that you have to /teach/ kids how to
read, meaning infrastructure, schools, curriculum and teachers. OLPC
intends to test this idea to the limit by dropping laptops into areas
which have none of these things. As Negroponte points out in his talk at
the UN 'If you can't read you're toast'. For kids with access to regular
educational opportunity, basic literacy will be one of the first things
they learn. This argument was won in the developed world many decades
ago when educators realised that literacy provides access to elementary
knowledge acquisition and further learning. The One Laptop Per Child
Foundation believes that this principle should be extended to all
primary age children on the planet and with your help we intend to
pursue this goal through wider distribution of the XO laptop and of
course the teaching materials it contains.

OLPC Named in MIT's top 50 projects of all time

XOs cause excitement at a school in Mozambique in August 2010

MIT is a globally recognised centre of excellence, responsible for a
large quantity of world changing and mind bending ideas. OLPC remains
one of the legendary Media Lab's most well known products and is the
brain child of MIT Media Lab co-founder Nicholas Negroponte. Our
mission; to bridge the digital divide by giving away laptop computers to
primary age children in the poorest countries in the world. The rich
world simply can't afford /not/ to do this. As inequality has grown
exponentially, the gap between rich and poor has become unsustainable.
OLPC aims to fill this gap. The Boston Globe, part of the New York Times
family has ranked MIT's discoveries, placing OLPC in the top 50. We're
proud to be included in such a select group and continue to look outward
to those with no access to the opportunities and priveliges we take for
granted.

SEYMOUR PAPERT: '...rational, critical thinking'

PAPERT VIDEO

/The more people that are capable of rational, critical thinking the
better the world will be. The more they have access to knowledgeabout
the rest of the world, the better the world will be./

This Seymour Papert quote could well become our rallying cry at One
Laptop Per Child. Our mission is to give the poorest kids in the world
access to critical thinking and above all to reveal the rest of the
world to them through knowledge and learning. As their horizons expand
they will be well placed to contribute meaningfully to their local
context and to raise their voices in the wider global conversation.
Papert believes passionately in making the tools for learning available
to as many people as possible and has devoted his life to thinking about
education and schools, most influentially in the field of machine
enhanced learning. As Negroponte consistently points out; no one asks
anymore whether OLPC's ideas work, their value has been proven many
times over. Instead the question has become; how best to pay for them?
