Bonjour

Cordialement,
Marie-Charlotte Buisson

Marie-Charlotte,
This is a good solution as it leverages known technical
expertise which will be needed to do this test.
I recommend contacting OLPC France through their alias (see:
0000,0000,EEEEhttp://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_France).
I am also copying Bastien Guerry who I know and is active in the
group.

Re: OLPCs for Senegal, Burkina Faso and Mali
Robert,
For us, a good way to make sure that Epidata could run satisfactory
with the XO would be to test it.
It will also be a good way for us to familiarize ourself with the
laptop.
In that sence, would it be possible to put us in contact with the
french team of OLPC based in Paris. The idea is to test to install
Epidata using Wine emulator on one of their laptop, I suppose they
have some for demonstration. The deadline are still short, so if this
idea is usefull and realistic, the best would be to meet them at the
end of this week or at the beginning of the next week.

Marie-Charlotte,
You are, of course, right. I left off the link which is
0000,0000,FFFFhttp://wiki.laptop.org/go/Hardware
The software is going to be difficult. The XO can run
Windows but the it is not available as a product pending licensing and
the identification of a Microsoft OEM.
If you have a copy of the Linux distribution, we might be
able to help.

Re: OLPCs for Senegal, Burkina Faso and Mali
Robert,
Thank you for your answer. I'm not sure but the end of your answer on
alternative power seems to be truncated.
For the data entry solfware and its requirement :
Epidata when installed is about 2,5Mb. It's developped for Windows
(95/98/NT/2000/XP).
Tests for Linux with Wine exists, but the results point out some
limitations.
All informations on the software are

Re: OLPCs for Senegal, Burkina Faso and Mali
Robert,
Thank you for your answer on prices, it's coherent with our planning
budgets. We would like to have more technical details on the OLPC-XO
specifications. Some are available on the wiki but I wish to be sure
that the models are exactly the same that the ones we will get for the
surveys. As you already know our delays are short, and I want to be
sure that we will be able to take laptop in hand until their delivery.
In that sense I have several questions :
1. Can you send us the specifications of the hardware.
0000,0000,FFFF Please see the attached
specification sheet.
2. Concerning the battery, could you indicate us which one, GoldPeak
or BYD (following the wiki) would be installed. And what is the time
of discharge in normal use.
0000,0000,FFFF They would be BYD batteries.
Normal is a hard standard given the variability in field use. However,
we would say 4 hours.
3. Our objective is to install a data entry software which would be
use by the surveyors, Epidata for example. The standard environment
used by the OLPC-XO seems to be Sugar. Do you think that the
installation of Epidata will matter? And if it's the case, can we
easily work in a windows environment, or find an other data entry
software functioning without problems under sugar ?
0000,0000,FFFF What operating systems does it
currently run on and what are the hardware requirements for it?
Depending I'll refer you to one of our software engineers for further
suggestions.
4. Last but not least, the additional power generator : The fact is
that we'll work in rural villages without any power during at least 8
hours each day. So we need a peripheral to charge each computer, the
best would be to charge laptop in real time, without switch down the
laptop during the charging process . Before to contact you, we have
seen several options : handle crank, yoyo power generator, foot power
generator and solar options. You seem to direct us toward solar
panels. Can you explain us the specification of this option and of the
other (if available for purchase) to be sure to make the right choice.
0000,0000,FFFF Currently only the solar option
is available. The panels that we source are 10 watts that are rated to
charge in about 3 hrs. They cost $26 plus shipping. There exist other
mechanical and solar solutions in the market place. The is a
significant amount of discussion in the wiki about alternative power.
For starters, please see
Thank you for your answers.

Jean-Louis,
We can get this started very quickly.
Immediately, lets get laptops to you for your fieldwork. The
laptops would cost $399 each (inclusive of the ones you are Giving)
plus shipping or US $16,758 for the laptops. The solar panels are $26
each + shipping. It would simplify things if we were sending to one
address. I can send payment information when you are ready.
Let me know what else I can tell you about this process or
OLPC.

OLPCs for Senegal, Burkina Faso and Mali
Dear Robert,
Many thanks first of all to Matt for putting us in touch.
I am copying various colleagues who are participating in the
project
so that they are all in the loop.
As Matt mentioned, we need 42 of the laptops for survey
fieldwork in
Burkina, Mali and Senegal (with roughly the same numbers being
donated
as well), and we need to make sure that we have enough power:
we saw
your "yoyo generators" on the web, and Matt mentioned solar
panels
that are adapted to the conditions in the field.
Let me know how we can kickstart the process. I'm really
looking
forward to seeing these machines, and using them for fieldwork
---this
should make data collection much more efficient in that we
will be
able to eliminate the data-entry phase and reduce errors
through
having surveyors directly enter information into the entry
mask.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest
convenience, and I
can call you (on Skype or Skype out, for example) if that is
ok with
you --just let me know when. I am in South Africa right now,
but if
you are in Cambridge MA, we can take advantage of the time
difference
and I can call you when I get out of my conference at the end
of the
working day.
Yours,
Jean-Louis
