Java not working inside the Browse activity is a known bug. I posted it 
as Trac #6465. this seems to be a compilation problem with Browse on 
OLPC's part.

I believe that Java works with Opera under Sugar.

Java works with Firefox under XFCE. There are clear instructions for 
installing XFCE and Firefox on the wiki -- look for XFCE.
