[OLPC Networking] hostap & olpc mesh

As you may be aware, Intersil's Prism 2/2.5/3 chipsets have a mode where
most of the 802.11 work is done by the host computer, rather than by the
card firmware. This has allowed Jouni Malinen to write the hostap driver,
which implements an access point on typical device hardware, including some
WDS-based AP-AP mesh functions.

I speculate that a similar approach might be used to implement the
pseudo-802.11s mesh networking of the XO on a Prism card, such that a school
server could be implemented on already available hardware, without an active
antenna.

Has anyone considered this sort of thing previously?

I know that the OLPC is based on the (unpublished) 802.11s spec, but that
it's also not exactly the same because of some limitation of the Marvel
chips. Is there good documentation somewhere for the protocol, as
implemented, that someone else could follow?
