It is very encouraging to see so much activity and interest in
translating Sugar into the indigenous languages of South and Central
America.  OLPC Mexico's Huastec (Téenek) team has made incredible
progress and it is to be hoped that they might work on other languages
indigenous to Mexico.  OLPC Peru and SomosAzucar are preparing to work
on Quechua and Aymara languages (common in Peru).

In order to assist these efforts with the recruitment of localizers
bilingual in Spanish and the indigenous language (but not necessarily
English), the PO files for the core Sugar projects from Pootle have
been pre-processed using the instrans tool (with a little manual
fixing) so that they now contain the Spanish strings as translator
comments.  This will assist in translation from Spanish to the
indigenous language (by non-English speakers).

There are sometimes challenges with selecting the correct ISO-639
language codes, but working with Amos Batto (an Andean language
subject matter expert from http://www.runasimipi.org/ we have settled
on lang-quy and lang-quz for Quechua (representing the most common
Peruvian variants) and are working on selecting the correct codes to
use for Aymara.

Similar language projects will be set up for Aymara once the question

to choose from, so this must the done carefully.

When the Spanish localization of GCompris is completed, Sugar Labs
will host a temporary local copy for translation into the Quechua
languages or other indigenous languages not present upstream in the
Gnome project.

Other South and Central American indigenous languages (Nahuatl,
Tzotil, etc.) can be set up in the same way, but in the meantime the
following is a general colelction of the templates with Spanish
included as a bridging language that can be downloaded, translated and
then uploaded to any other Central and South American indigenous
language project that has been established.  Please do not work
directly in the template project linked below.
