I am happy to see progress .<br>Personally what you need now is to apply not IT but management principles of planning and giving this whole process a clear direction.<br>I read every mailer only to find it a one step forward and three backward.<br>
Sorry critiquing....but how can we put processes in place? How can I contribute? The XO is coming....hopefully....but can we put support systems in place.?Is there anyone here in South India so we can form a group and get some attention?<br>

A few points that I'd like to add:<br>

The conference call sound quality was a bit of a problem, although I<br>
don't think this was a problem with the setup. It sounded like someone<br>
on the conference call was sitting in traffic...way too much traffic<br>
noise. It was also suggested that we could perhaps look for a hybrid<br>
conference call setup which would support dial-in and VoIP calls. I know<br>
that Gizmo supports such a feature, but AFAIK the call in number is a<br>
US-based number. See<br>

In terms of the upcoming installs or pilots in India, I would reiterate<br>
that interested people and parties should look to other pilots for<br>
"lessons learned". Nepal and Pakistan come to mind, given their<br>
proximity. I've seen a lot more public info on the Nepal pilot, though.<br>
<a href="http://www.olenepal.org/" target="_blank">http://www.olenepal.org/</a> There are several issues that can be<br>
categorized into hardware, software, localization, repairs, training,<br>
etc. Many of these will be largely the same for most deployments, so no<br>
reinvention is necessary. Some issues will of course be specific for<br>
deployments in different parts of India, and those will have to be<br>
addressed on a case by case basis.<br>
<br>
Another item of concern is the level of awareness. I've talked to people<br>
at a couple of different LUGs in India about the project, and I got a<br>
sense if indifference from them. Perhaps we need a stronger push to<br>
connect LUGs into different OLPC projects. LUGs tend to have goals<br>
similar to what OLPC has. LUGs aren't really about Linux or FOSS as much<br>
as they are about education! This was my suggestion to Gaurav (from<br>
Punjab University) on the phone call. Gaurav's group at Punjab<br>
University is doing interesting things in reaching out to the<br>
communities. Gaurav: Can we hear from you on some of those activities?<br>
Perhaps pointers to slides, blogs, etc.?<br>

LUGs all over India can get involved and spread the word. They can go<br>
out to the local communities and improve awareness. There is also a<br>
perception that if you don't have an XO, you can't really do much. This<br>

Fedora-derived distro. You could very well run an entire classroom of<br>
these LiveCDs on regular desktops and still avail the features of Sugar!<br>

Then we have the localization bit. Sayamindu Dasgupta and others have<br>
done a great job of setting up this resource. We need to be able to use<br>
it to its fullest extent.<br>

I just want to add this : XO-LiveCD is nice but for those wanting to<br>
participate to the creation of manuals, tutorials or software<br>
development, using Virtualization is the way to go : with VMWare,<br>
VirtualBox,... (see <a href="http://wiki.laptop.org" target="_blank">wiki.laptop.org</a>)<br>
You can work in MSWindows or Linux or Mac having the XO open in a<br>
Window... very useful for taking snapshots for example.<br>

Sometimes you just can't get to a computer, but you can talk on the<br>
phone. I think voice calls actually convey a lot more than IRC channels.<br>
Of course, we can always have IRC in parallel. That's what we did for<br>
the server team conference.<br>

Would it not be more feasible to use biogas for cooking and cooling,<br>
and brewing some vodka - I mean - ethanol to power a little fuel cell<br>
to run the OLPC ?<br>
Don't tell me there's no Vodka-equivalent over there... so the<br>

As a "Kyoto Protocol Consultant", I dare to say that prices of<br>
PhotoVoltaics or Fuel Cells shouldn't be a problem since the OLPC-<br>
organisation could claim the CO2-certificates for the whole project:<br>
1. I think that opening up the olpc-project from a computer project<br>
to an education to a CO2-reducing project would enable the OLPC-<br>
education project to get access to the financial power behind the<br>
"Kyoto Protocol".<br>

2. The logic is; A normal PC consumes an average x kWh. Electricity<br>
is produced on the average in that country by emitting y tons of<br>
Greenhouse gasses. So using an OLPC only uses x-something kWh x 1<br>
million OLPC's in this country and the difference of the normal<br>
computers - olpc computers in Greenhouse gasses NOT emitted can be<br>
claimed as CO2 certificates and sold to CO2 emitting<br>
countries'governments and companies in the West that HAVE to buy CO2-<br>
certificates (price is now about 20?/CO2certificate.<br>
<br>
3. I'd say: present OLPC as a technique where you go via the kids and<br>
the schools to the parents and society as a whole to catalyze CO2-<br>
reducing projects and the accompanying CO2-certificates: let the<br>
ministiry of education make a list of all the Schools and public<br>

mandate to present that to the "Kyoto Protocol" financiers that need<br>
CO2-certificates ... I am sure I can convince them to finance such a<br>
project under these conditions.<br>
