Dear Sameer,
Alas, one photograph doth not a movement make!
I accept the official vs voluntary OLPC distinction and if that is the way OLPC is structured, that is perfectly fine. However, the issue may arise when the voluntary tries to establish the official connection and representation and I hope all of us are cautious about that. Then again, may be I am using a corporate perspective rather than a voluntary one.
Yes, we need to work towards one goal- that of reaching out to all disadvantagd children of India. The OLPC movement will mostly be judged more by how many childrn it touched rather than nearly anything else.
We have been focusing on expansion of users rather than blogging about them. Of course, media is a way to reach out to people. An OLPC with 100 membrs in a country of a billion plus will hardly mean much.
I am also a member of the discussion group you talk about and I have not seen any discussion in the past month save one write up you sent andwhile Icould not come across any spamming, the moderator may have been so insecure about his or her role that s/he made an open discussions moderated??
The fact is that I am very intrigued about your defence of the voluntary vis a vis the official. Defence of what happened a year ago versus what has happened since.
One would have thought that large companies in India will buy at least tens of thousands if not millions of laptops to distribute as part of their corporate social responsibility. Do you know how many did the company you refer to did buy?
I understand, and will be glad to be corrected, however, that OLPC did donate some 500 to them. A non profit donating to for profit?
That said, may I request we close this discussion right here and I will be grateful for any support in finding some technical volunteers in and around Delhi.
Best regards,
Saurabh
