Skype is free as in beer but not free as in speech. We have a couple different voice chat options that would run with less over head than Skype on the XO. Skype's benefit would be their integration into standard phone lines, which is something that is pretty us-centric afaik.<br>
<br>WorldVistA runs as a character cell user interface on the xo already. It's not the prettiest thing in the world, and we would need a doctor or medical professional to look it over and decide if it was something they would like to use.<br>

I am very new to the OLPC initiative. I am a doctor by profession and medical<br>
software developer by choice. I am involved with the GNUmed medical record<br>
software. I am wondering if you see any use in tests of this software in OLPC<br>
environments.<br>
<br>
GNUmed (<a href="http://wiki.gnumed.de" target="_blank">wiki.gnumed.de</a>) is
free software and is written in python and wxpython<br>
(GTK). It usually connects to a postgresql server but could also be made<br>
store its data in a sqlite database.<br>
<br>
I admit I know very little about medical IT needs in OLPC environments. maybe<br>
it is just pure overkill and out of scope.<br>
<br>
I imagine two possible uses. The individual OLPC could be used to enter very<br>
basic demographic information so organizations involved get a picture of who<br>
is in need of medical care (in general). the hardware (microphone and camera<br>
can be used to assess medical condtitions such as skin conditions or wounds<br>
and could then be assessed by more centralized medical personell like in a<br>
city. The use of Wifi coupled with asynchronous wifi networks (see<br>
<a href="http://www.nilshettich.com/olpcblog/" target="_blank">http://www.nilshettich.com/olpcblog/</a>)
could transfer medical/health<br>
information both ways.<br>

Maybe this is just my Western thinking. In case this is way off the needs in<br>
OLPC environments just discard this message.<br>

A great way to catch up on what's currently going on in the OLPC Health<br>

and also look over other pages tagged as being health-related (<br>
<a href="http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Category:Health" target="_blank">http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Category:Health</a>).
Information flow is often a mix<br>
of messages to this list, wiki-page creation and editing and even IRC chat<br>
on #olpc-health.<br>
<br>
GNUmed's status as open-source, and specifically being coded in Python could<br>
make it a good fit for use on the XO platform, although as you mention, it<br>
is an open question of whether EMR software is matched to a need at<br>
deployment sites, at least right now. There are others interested in
making<br>
an electronic medical record systems available (see<br>
<a href="http://wiki.laptop.org/go/WorldVistA" target="_blank">http://wiki.laptop.org/go/WorldVistA</a>),
and I'm sure they would welcome<br>
discussion about GNUmed and electronic medical records in general.<br>
<br>
I hope you chose to stick around get involved with OLPC Health Project<br>
efforts, either with GNUmed specifically or with joining in on some other<br>
coding or content effort, because I think that the health-related work can<br>
use as much input from cross-trained (health and IT) contributors as<br>
possible. I also think that activity (application) development will have
a<br>
lot to add to just a collection of textual content for the health library.<br>
<br>
My own interest at the moment is on building up that library and making it<br>
easier for others (especially health/science subject matter experts) to<br>
contribute.<br>

gathering for mapping and other information projects. Your software<br>
has obvious public health applications.<br>

You must think as you do, not being anybody else than yourself. That<br>
is not the problem, which only arises if you fail to ask those whom<br>
you would help how your proposal would fit with what they really need.<br>

I have followed the community for some time. GNUmed is largely absent from the<br>
radar as it has no billing component and therefore not large userbase. It is<br>
however an EMR and not aimed at large clinics.<br>
<br>
As we are Germany
based there has not been any attempt to add US specific<br>
features such as billing.<br>
<br>
For the time being I will test if GNUmed runs on the OLPC but if that makes<br>
sense would be up to local deployers.<br>

a yum install on an XO. People on the devel list, notable Albert<br>

I don't have access to my devel machine here, so I can install it when<br>
I get there to check. It should be installable, just that if you could<br>
list dependencies of this package , it would help to better determine<br>
what all additional packages would be needed to be installed and<br>
whether they are already there on the XO as part of the default build<br>
or not...<br>
