be transferred over WiFi to the POP and on to a regional health care facility. Data

is security of the data. It might not be important in the OLPC milieus at this
Hi all,

I am very new to the OLPC initiative. I am a doctor by profession and medical
software developer by choice. I am involved with the GNUmed medical record
software. I am wondering if you see any use in tests of this software in OLPC
environments.

GNUmed (wiki.gnumed.de) is
free software and is written in python and wxpython
(GTK). It usually connects to a postgresql server but could also be made
store its data in a sqlite database.

I admit I know very little about medical IT needs in OLPC environments. maybe
it is just pure overkill and out of scope.

I imagine two possible uses. The individual OLPC could be used to enter very
basic demographic information so organizations involved get a picture of who
is in need of medical care (in general). the hardware (microphone and camera
can be used to assess medical condtitions such as skin conditions or wounds
and could then be assessed by more centralized medical personell like in a
city. The use of Wifi coupled with asynchronous wifi networks (see
http://www.nilshettich.com/olpcblog/)
could transfer medical/health
information both ways.

Maybe this is just my Western thinking. In case this is way off the needs in
OLPC environments just discard this message.

I am greatful for any reply.

A great way to catch up on what's currently going on in the OLPC Health
Project(s) is to start over on the wiki (http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Health)
and also look over other pages tagged as being health-related (
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Category:Health).
Information flow is often a mix
of messages to this list, wiki-page creation and editing and even IRC chat
on #olpc-health.

GNUmed's status as open-source, and specifically being coded in Python could
make it a good fit for use on the XO platform, although as you mention, it
is an open question of whether EMR software is matched to a need at
deployment sites, at least right now. There are others interested in
making
an electronic medical record systems available (see
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/WorldVistA),
and I'm sure they would welcome
discussion about GNUmed and electronic medical records in general.

I hope you chose to stick around get involved with OLPC Health Project
efforts, either with GNUmed specifically or with joining in on some other
coding or content effort, because I think that the health-related work can
use as much input from cross-trained (health and IT) contributors as
possible. I also think that activity (application) development will have
a
lot to add to just a collection of textual content for the health library.

My own interest at the moment is on building up that library and making it
easier for others (especially health/science subject matter experts) to
contribute.
telemedicine
> > > kits that some of us and other developers are working on.
There is a
> > > project in Google Summer of Code to use Measure for
recording data
> > > from a low-cost EKG device.
> >
> > Where can I find more information on that ?
>
> > > We have contacts with a number of other Open Source health
care
> > > software providers. You can find many of them on the SCALE
web site at
href="http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale6x/conference-info/schedules/"
target="_blank">http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale6x/conference-info/schedules/.
Some
> > > of the presentation videos are now available from there.
> >
> > I have followed the community for some time. GNUmed is largely
absent
> > from the radar as it has no billing component and therefore not large
> > userbase. It is however an EMR and not aimed at large clinics.
> >
> > As we are Germany
based there has not been any attempt to add US
> > specific features such as billing.
>
> We have some hope of getting over that nonsense in the next few years,
> but we aren't holding our breaths.
>
> > For the time being I will test if GNUmed runs on the OLPC but
if that
> > makes sense would be up to local deployers.
>
> If there is a Red Hat package for it, you should have no trouble doing
> a yum install on an XO. People on the devel list, notable Albert
> Cahalan, can help you get it Sugarized. I see the Ubuntu
> (Debian-style) packages in their repository.

I hope it is installable. Fedora 7 package is here:
I don't have access to my devel machine here, so I can install it when
I get there to check. It should be installable, just that if you could
list dependencies of this package , it would help to better determine
what all additional packages would be needed to be installed and
whether they are already there on the XO as part of the default build
or not...
