This was a big problem when the XO-1.75 was first available for testing. 
It's a lot better than it used to be.

yum does not help the situation one bit, simply failing with no useful 
error messages. If you run tcpdump and examine with wireshark you can 
see what yum is trying to do. You may need to use -p to avoid turning on 
promiscuous mode as this disables all networking.

I never found a yum debug option which would print a succinct "getting x 
from y, got redirect to z, had 404 on z, can't find x" for each resource 
it tries to get. Nor an option to try all the mirrors until one works. 
However I didn't try very hard to find such a thing.
