It's pretty ugly.

Gmail in its "advanced" mode may be trying to use a Flash widget for
the file chooser for file pre-upload -- it did not very long ago.
Flash and/or Gnash presence and version may be a variable here.

Or it may be using new HTML5 file upload widgets -- that allow for
fancy stuff like multi-file selection, and probably the file
pre-upload. This area has been marked as "new/enhanced feature" in
xulrunner 1.9.1 (F11) and 1.9.2 (F14).

If anyone plays with a newer xulrunner, even a minor rev bump,
remember to update to a matching FF. Those two are tight together...
