It looks like the XO-1.75 has the LIS33xx, which is roughly the same
accelerometer as used in the iPhone, Android phones, etc.

Our ODM suggested replacing our LIS33DH with an accelerometer from
Kionix (we went with the KXTE9; it turned out when we tested with
games we didn't need more than 6-bit resolution, but Kionix also has
high-resolution devices) because ST microelectronics was having
leadtime issues with the LISxx accelerometers.  I think the Kionix
solution saved a bit of BOM cost, too.

I don't know if that's a good second-source alternative for OLPC or
not, but it might be worth some investigation.
