I know the screen has trouble reproducing the full color range
(although better than many desktop LCDs) but isn't it better to have
the full range? Or are there any serious issues with OFW that make
this undoable?

Wouldn't it be better to go stright to EXT2? Have you seen these tests
by Ted Tso?

The EXT2 FS can reduce the amount of writes that journaling needs and
EXT3 can also be tweaked. I decided to not use journaling altogether
and been using EXT2 filesystems on pen-drives and SD card on the XO-1.
I haven't noticed any corruption at all.
Please excuse me if you're already using a tweaked EXT3 version, but
I'm downloading OS33 just now.
