overhead in a G1G1 environment

I seem to remember with 8.2.x and earlier that, all too often, when
I ran 'top' it would show 'olpc-update-query' using resources.
My XO was gotten through G1G1, and I am not using it in any kind of
a "server" environment. [Given the communications setup at my
house, cron by itself does not even have the resources to
successfully make a connection to the internet.] In that situation,
is it truly necessary for 'olpc-update-query' to be run ?
