Building an OLPC kernel

Hi,
I found this link http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Kernel_Building and I tried to follow it. But when I run "tar zcvf kern.tar.gz arch/i386/boot/bzImage System.map /lib/modules/$VERS", I got this error "tar: error exit delayed from previous errors".
Note that I use ubuntu 8.10 machine.
Can anyone help me !!!
