SD content disappearance

I have a "permanent" ext2 SD card in my XOs, which contains data and 
software (in addition to those on nand).  Twice now, while running 
800 (the 8.2.1. candidate), the following sequence has occurred:

  -  I am running normally, with access to my SD card content
  -  I plug in an (additional) USB external storage device
  -  I can no longer access my SD card content

[This time the system froze.]  Rebooting, and examination of my 
system, revealed that my SD card now had an EMPTY partition table -- 
  the previously existing partition table information had vanished.

[What I've been doing in consequence is to reformat the SD card, and 
re-populate it with content.  (Moving in 3GB does take a while.)]
