That's not entirely fair. If you submit the driver for inclusion in
the kernel tree, then the dev who pushes for the API change is on the
hook to update all the drivers to the new API.
I don't know how well it fares long term, but we haven't really seen
the long term, and it is a fairly complex and evolving dynamic.
I hate to see our work dismissed in one liners -- those guys are also
working hard, and trying hard to make things happen with new
strategies.
