Why can't i access /dev/dsp or /dev/snd on my XO

Might help a little to address your issues above ?

As a musician, I don't know of anything else that comes close - and that 
includes some pretty expensive proprietary systems with pretty 
blinged-out user interfaces!

Please don't make me have to go back to midi :)
