glxgears opens a window, but the software rendering performance will
depend not just on that window, but also on the contents of the rest
of the screen at the time. Perhaps the Ubuntu desktop had xfce in
the background, and the OLPC desktop had the sugar home view, and
perhaps there is a difference in rendering load between the two?
