The VistA is back end is written in MUMPS.

There used to be several versions of MUMPS.  With all of the changes
of ownership,
etc.  2 remain, plus 1 relative newcomer.

    GT.M, recently renamed FIS GT.M, has been released as open source
    under the GPL.  It is available at:

         http://sourceforge.net/projects/fis-gtm

    Cache is a proprietary closed source version of MUMPS.

    M21 is a newer proprietary closed source version.

VistA runs under GT.M and Cache.  And I assume it runs under M21.

The VistA source code hase been released by the US Government in
response to a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request.  It is
public domain.

There are several problems with the FOIA release.  It depends on the
specifics of the development environment in place at the VA.  There
are missing pieces of the puzzle, where the VA used components from
commercial proprietary software.

The WorldVistA organization has taken the FOIA release and modified
it for a standard development environment, replacing the missing pieces,
or negotiating solutions to the licensing issues (for example, AMA CPT
Medical Procedure Codes).  The WorldVistA modifications are GPL.

The essential clients are written in Borland Delphi and are the topic of
another message in this thread earlier today.
