the reason that the XO defaults to only using channels 1, 6, and 11 is 
that anything closer togeather has interference problems. the folks who 
designed the channel designations really blew it when they specified it as 
11 channels in that frequency range, they really should have only called 
it 3 channels (on the frequencies currently used by channels 1, 6, 11)

there is no legitimate reason (in the US 802.11b/g band) to ever use 
anything other than 1, 6, or 11.
