Here's a version of amd_drv with this kludge implemented and full debug
symbols enabled:

Aleph, would you mind installing it in your test environment and run
some of your benchmarks before and after the cure?

Testing with 1.4 only should be fine...  The cairo performance suite
is probably the best test.
