At the Open Firmware level, the serial number is displayed in the 
initial startup banner.  That doesn't have all the desired attributes, 
but is a fallback check that is somewhat difficult to subvert.

The new plastic will have two-tone color-coded XO logos on the back, 
providing some amount of identification.

Finally, experience with initial deployments has shown that the children 
immediately personalize their laptops with stickers.

So this is likely to turn into a non-problem.
