Performance issues for UTF-8 to UTF-16?

Is there an interest in a UTF-8 to UTF-16 transcoder that
runs 3X+ faster than iconv using MMX capabilities?   As part of 
my research into high-speed XML/Unicode/string processing
using parallel bit streams, u8u16 is a fairly well advanced
implementation available as open source software on
our development website u8u16.costar.sfu.ca
