[OT] struggles installing builds

FYI - finally managed to put an update.1 build on my G1G1. For my
system, the solution was using an USB stick, instead of a SD card,
to load in the build image. [With SD cards, the process would erase
the nand contents, but would then get stuck when trying to write.]
The strange part was that following the wiki Activated_Upgrade
process (e.g., for 653) worked with SD, but following the wiki
Autoreinstallation process (e.g., for 657) kept failing with SD.
['Olpc-update' seems not meant for my situation -- I don't have mesh
or wifi, but only wired (which then goes through a proxy).]
I prefer to look at documentation to show me "what is possible". To
me (when faced with the 'ok' prompt) the Open Firmware information
mentioned in the wiki seemed a poor guide; even 'help' was limited
in its coverage. [For instance: is it readable someplace that the
OFW device identifier syntax is 'sd:' for accessing the "SD card" ?]
The descriptions of the 'Cheat Codes' are scattered and confusing.
[For instance: does button 'X' (at boot) override the presence of
an os_image (etc.) on /boot of an USB device ?] There were even
boots when I needed one hand to hold down one button, a second hand
to hold down another button, and a third hand to press 'power on'.
