 In principle we can update the boards in the field.  I have a parallel
 port dongle that is supposed to be able to reprogram the FPGA.  The bad
 news is that the dongle is expensive ($150 for the parallel port version,
 $300 for the USB version, and the parallel version is reputed not to work
 with USB-to-parallel adapters).  The other bad news is that the
 programming software from Altera is somewhat painful to acquire and
 install.  I have started a wiki page describing how to do it, but haven't
 finished the page because I haven't completely succeeded in the procedure.
