boy do I feel stupid!

chroot initrd-fs /bin/ash
kept failing with "not found". I kept thinking, "this is acting just 
like ld-linux.so is missing, but that can't be it".

Well, that is it! I will try to do this today, but the build initrd step 
needs to grab an ld-linux.so from somewhere useful, or none of the 
busybox stuff will work.

p.s. So chroot initrd-fs /bin/ash works, but still no good on qemu, I am 
looking at that now.
