Ron,
1) Surf http://www.dmtf.org/standards/smbios/ 
    System Information (Type 1) offset 07h - Serial number string
    and the interface to get/set the structure.	

2) 16 bytes including 1 byte for year, 2 bytes for week, 4 bytes for sequential number and etc.

Which part of the standard do you mean?

I will assume this is a small size. can we put it in a small region at the top of the keybaord BIOS?
