I just tried opera. Wow! It's a great browser on the xo.

It has tabbed browsing, bookmarks with optional shortcut keys and solves the image save and upload problem by saving images to /home/olpc. Files are saved with their original file name and when I upload to blogger, opera looks in /home/olpc so it just works.

It does appear that the opera rendering engine doesn't like (read 'ignores') the css tag style="float:left" but other than that its great!

Thanks for suggesting opera!
Paul

Both Opera and wget are great ideas. I'll give both a try now. Thanks!

Is there an easy way to get an image URL out of a web page?

If I were to use wget I'd need to know the URL for the image. Often images are in a webpage and I'd do a view image or save as in firefox. The only way I can figure out how to get a URL for an image using browers is to CTRL-u and sift through the source.

An alternate approach is to use the tool 'wget' to download your image
in the terminal, e.g.:

wget -O my.jpg
http://some.where/some.jpg
wget http://some.other/file.jpg

would produce 'my.jpg' and '
file.jpg' in the current directory.

Michael

On Fri, Dec 21, 2007 at 08:31:36PM +0000, phigan wrote:
>
>
> russelldad at
>
> Opera ( http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Opera) is what I've been using, and it seems to work pretty well! You have to install it and run it in Terminal. Things you need to know:
>
> Opera-activity on that page doesn't work right now.
> When you download something in the Browse activity, it goes into the Journal and in /home/olpc/.sugar/default/datastore/store as a funky filename. Match up the date and filesize, 'cp' it to your /home/olpc directory, and then erase it from the Journal.
> To install an rpm, do this as root: rpm -vi <filename>
> To run opera after it's installed: opera &
>
> It gives you a right-click menu and will let you save images.
>
> - Joe
