Douglas, you can't connect to a WPA encrypted router with an XO right out of the box because it has build 650.

See it:
cat /boot/olpc_build

I had the same problem.  I even hassled with an old router with no encryption and just gave up and upgraded to build 653 which corrects the WPA  problem.  I now can connect to my WPA encrypted linksys router.
