Michael,

For mp3, you need to do the fluendo install:  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Fluendo_mp3_decoder

If you are comfortable with the command line, you can install mplayer and get audio and full-screen video going:

There is also a built-in media player called totem that you can run from the command line (no mp3s until the codec is installed, though)
