Karen:
1- the Google page that you see on your XO is simply a generated screen 
and does not indicate that you've connected. :-(    There are bunches of 
pages to be found on http://forum.laptom.org that address the 
connectivity puzzle.
2- never send an email without a subject entry, nobody will notice
