I'm still betting you need to re-flash -- but, as I said, I know very
little. Perhaps someone with the project will jump in.

I just re-flashed back to 650. I had flashed to 653 after my experience
like yours. 653 may have a bug, plus I'd rather be where OLPC wants me.
This went just fine.
