Michael...
1) we have not yet reached the end
2) OS650.img refuses to download cleanly. This is my third attempt, and 
I even changed the USB stick to a 128 mb Cruzer
3) I suspect that I wandered onto the memory map (or whatever it's 
called) during my random key pushing, when I got a screen that was just 
like the one (with all the tiny boxes) during the first step of the 
reflash. And, just like the curious child I am, I continued hitting 
keys, one of them being the delete. (Does that sound like a reasonable 
explanation of why the Journal ceased to load?)
