Larry,
Your error report makes it sound like the Journal (and all other
activities are crashing on startup).
The simplest way we might be able to fix the problem is to reflash the
laptop to factory defaults. Instructions on how to do this can be found at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activated_Upgrade#Upgrade_the_Activated_Laptop
(Just ignore the remarks about activation leases - all the G1G1 laptops
are pre-activated.)
While I have some confidence that this operation will fix your laptop,
it is also likely to destroy any evidence remaining of what went wrong.
If you're feeling adventurous and you have a fast internet connection,
it might be worth trying to capture some logs and filesystem data before
reflashing.
