1. Human Power: Two groups have been designing human power options for
OLPC. Eight approaches were reviewed over the past week.
2. Taiwan: Mark Foster notes several significant new milestones:
o The OLPC prototypes are now reliably booting Red Hat's standard Fedora
Core 5 Linux distribution, including the full graphical user interface.
o The on-board wireless mesh network hardware has been tuned and
validated, thanks to exemplary support by Marvell. OLPC prototypes are now
802.11b/g network participants?they are successfully communicating with
standard 802.11 access points.
3. Walter Bender has been engaging Larry Lessig in a discussion about
developing strategies for leveraging the Creative Commons
(http://creativecommons.org) in terms of both assembling a library of
materials for the kids and putting together a collection of ?kid-readable?
(they currently support ?human-readable?) summaries of their licenses.
4. The first of the languages from the Indian subcontinent, Bengali, made
its appearance on the OLPC website, thanks to the efforts of Rajib Ghosh
and Sunil Vemuri.
