#12814: gnome is missing
-------------------------------------+-------------------------------------
Reporter: Quozl | Owner: Quozl
Type: defect | Status: assigned
Priority: high | Milestone: 14.1.0
Component: not assigned | Version: Development build
Resolution: | as of this date
Blocked By: | Keywords: 41003o4
Deployments affected: | Blocking: 12834, 12836
Verified: 0 | Action Needed: design
-------------------------------------+-------------------------------------
Changes (by Quozl):
* next_action: diagnose => design
Comment:
Diagnosis: the failure to start was caused by missing packages ''gnome-
shell'', ''mesa-dri-drivers'', and the disabled ''glx'' module in
xorg.conf. Gnome itself requires 3D acceleration support.
Workaround: add OpenGL support, add package ''gnome-shell'', change
xorg.conf to ensure ''glx'' is enabled.
Details:
* per #11810, edit ''/usr/share/olpc-utils/xorg.conf.d/xo4.conf'' and
remove these lines:
{{{
Section "Module"
Disable "glx"
EndSection
}}}
* restart the display manager:
{{{
service olpc-dm restart
}}}
* ''gnome-shell'' can then be started from the xterm that was set up to
replace gnome-session-failed.
* it runs properly, but very slowly, as expected, because of software
OpenGL implementation.
