New description:

 gnome is not in the build right now.

 when it is added, and selected, it does not start. it says "''On no!
 Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't
 recover. Please log out and try again.''" there is no cursor. touching
 the ''log out'' button provides a blank screen.

 to get back into sugar, use control-alt-f2 to switch to a text console,
 remove the desktop selection file, and restart olpc-dm:

 {{{
 rm /home/olpc/.olpc-active-desktop
 exec service olpc-dm restart
 }}}

 when gnome fails to start, the /tmp/olpc-dm-client.error.log file
 contains:

 {{{
 grep: /home/olpc/.hidden: No such file or directory
 No value set for `/apps/panel/general/applet_id_list'
 No value set for `/apps/nautilus/preferences/desktop_font'
 No value set for `/apps/metacity/general/titlebar_font'
 No value set for `/desktop/gnome/interface/document_font_name'
 No value set for `/desktop/gnome/interface/font_name'
 No value set for `/desktop/gnome/interface/monospace_font_name'
 gnome-session-is-accelerated: No hardware 3D support.
 gnome-session-check-accelerated: Helper exited with code 256
 gnome-session-is-accelerated: No hardware 3D support.
 gnome-session-check-accelerated: Helper exited with code 256

 ** (process:827): WARNING **: software acceleration check failed: Child
 process exited with code 1
 }}}

 gnome might need opengl.
