An XO-1 was left with me here at Twine with this problem. It also had the
symptom where even if you booted with the workaround that powerd no longer
responded to power button presses. On a hunch the two were related Paul
and I looked at what was going wrong with powerd. We discovered that
powerd was rejecting all events because all the timestamps were showing up
as negative numbers. Looking at the system date shows that the date was
set to sometime in 1968 which is prior to epoch and thus all time stamps
 were negative.

Updating the date to be the current date fixed both problems.

Root cause of this is currently unknown. Despite trying a lot of different
things I was unable to set the RTC to some value that resulted in a linux
 date of 1968
