 I've had some thoughts on this.

 We know that the rate seems to somehow influence this as 48k never fails.
 If turning on the ADC was sometimes failing I would expect it to sometimes
 fail at 48k too. but it doesn't seem to happen.  So along the same lines
 of retrying register writes what if the rate write somehow doesn't take or
 has conditions that make it screwy and somehow the setting for 48k is
 magic.

 In addition to trying multiple ADC enables I think we should try moving
 the spot in the series at which the rate is setup and/or doing multiple
 rate writes too.  Or maybe try writing a 48k rate first and then the
 desired rate.

 Also does this behavior duplicate under OFW?  If it does then that might
 give us a path to quickly try interactive permutations of register writes
 rather than having to build/install a new kernel each time.  And if it
 doesn't duplicate under OFW then that's another clue.
