Comment:
getting back to the original problem desciption: after the system sleeps
initially (e.g., with lid close) what we're seeing is an AC wakeup
followed by an immediate attempt to suspend. the suspend takes a very
long time to complete:
{{{
...
[ 86.723257] mmc0: dropping power over suspend
[ 86.727779] [galcore] enter gpu_suspend
[ 86.735926] [galcore] exit gpu_suspend, return 0

[ 86.744361] MARK:786 olpc_bat_suspend()
[ 86.744373] MARK:213 olpc_ec_disable_wakeup() 'olpc_ec->wakeup_mask' is
0xf9fd
[ 86.755394] PM: suspend of devices complete after 1200.075 msecs
[ 86.761357] MARK:1170 olpc_ec_1_75_suspend() 'ec->wakeup_mask' is
0xf9fd
[ 86.802399] PM: late suspend of devices complete after 46.998 msecs
[ 86.808885] PM: noirq suspend of devices complete after 6.474 msecs
[ 86.815229] mmp3_pm_enter_d2
[ 86.815249] before suspend
[ at this point, the power LED remained lit for 20 to 25 seconds. ]
}}}
the corresponding EC trace is:
{{{
event mask was 0xf9fd, is now 0xffff
event mask was 0xffff, is now 0xf9fd
504605:suspend_hint --> 1
suspend sync: 0000000a
[ long delay occurs here ]

savedWUEN[1] = 8
WUEN[1] = 8
WUEN[2] = 10
WUEN[6] = 10
WUEN[7] = 10
savedWUEN[9] = 44
WUEN[9] = 44
savedWUEN[13] = 20
}}}
this implies that either the VCXO_EN signal is staying high much longer
than we're expecting it to, or the EC isn't recognizing the transition.
i'll figure out which is happening, next.
