Comment(by wmb at firmworks.com):

 I forgot to mention in my last comment that, at one point, we discussed
 the possibility of punting the problem and treating the XO-4 as though it
 were a mono system. The obvious disadvantage is that we lose the
 "feature" of stereo. The advantage is that, considering the difficulty of
 getting stereo working right on MMP3 - and keeping it working - the
 overall user experience might be better with working mono vs. flaky
 stereo.

 The advantages of stereo over mono are subtle at best. It has been my
 experience that very few people actually know the difference except in a
 vague way - and on most program material and listening scenarios, will not
 be able to tell you which they are hearing. The transition - years ago -
 from mono to stereo was not driven by a marked improvement in sound
 quality, but rather by the equipment vendor's desire to sell new equipment
 into a saturated market. In many cases, the sound quality went down,
 because one good speaker usually sounds better than two lesser ones.
