 When I went back and tried to replicate the failure, the screen switched
 to the boot conversation, similar to the unfreeze statement in a forth
 boot sequence, but then the normal home screen appeared.  Repeated trials,
 without any USB device, reliably show boot log (the unfreeze event) but
 then boots normally.

 The error message, at the first, and only kernel panic, was something
 about including a parmeter specifying root fs -- as if the forth program
 had not set up the boot parameters passed to kernel correctly.

 Maybe I over-reacted. There may be no connection to the USB keyboard.
