 i think you're describing two different things.  one is expected, the
 other is not.

 first:  the touchscreen will not move the cursor.  this is expected.
 normally devices like tablets, with touchscreens, do not have mouse
 cursors, because the cursor can only move with your finger, and you
 already know where your finger is.  the home screen is a poor test of the
 touchscreen, because there is nothing to drag.  you should be able to tap
 on an activity to start it.  Physics is a good activity for testing the
 touchscreen.

 second: i think you may be seeing #12171, which causes X11 to crash.
