 once the driver gets into this state, it won't get out, meaning you'll
 continue getting timeouts forever.  i can reproduce, and i know how to
 poke the hardware to stop the "forever" behavior, but i'm still looking at
 how to prevent the issue in the first place.  (i also don't understand why
 we're only seeing this now.)

 reproduce:  do temperature reads from a loop running in the background,
 and compete for the driver with manual reads in the foreground.
