 This seems to happen only with some SD cards (hadn't tested booting with
 other SD cards on XO-1.75 before). The two problematic SD cards are:

  1. SanDisk Extreme HD Video 32GB SDHC class 10 UHS-I
  1. SanDisk Mobile Ultra 4GB microSDHC UHS-I

 At least the second one works fine on XO-1 and XO-1.5, so it's specific to
 XO-1.75. It's hard to judge given the sample size (only two other SD cards
 tested), but it looks like it's also specific to UHS-I cards.
