Comment(by sascha_silbe):

 Booting from an SD card (Sandisk 4GB class 4 microSD with full-size
 adapter, in external SD card slot) containing the same image as written to
 the USB sticks works fine (except for hanging at the name prompt, but
 that's a different issue).
